Backup distance protection scheme based on WAMS

Abstract:
A backup distance protection scheme based on WAMS(Wide Area Measurement System) is proposed,which transmits the impedance information of far-end system via WAMS and constructs the current relationship formula with the sequence component network. With the simultaneous frequency-domain equations,a linear fault location equation with three unknown coefficients is deduced,and with the fundamental-frequency and high-frequency components extracted by the matrix pencil method,the fault distance is obtained. The proposed scheme makes full use of the shared information and,unaffected by the frequency fluctuation,the system oscillation and the unknown far-end system impedance,it enhances the reliability and transition resistance enduring ability of protection. Its solving process is simple and fast,suitable for both single- and dual-loop line models. Simulation is carried out with EMTP and results show the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
